Advances in artificial intelligence are reshaping how mental health research is conducted, how care is delivered, and how clinical decisions are supported. At the University of Toronto, AI-M brings together clinicians, researchers, engineers, and trainees to develop, evaluate, and responsibly deploy AI technologies that are clinically grounded, ethically governed, and designed to augment – not replace – human expertise.

Our work spans a continuum of modern AI approaches, including Generative AI, Large Language Models, and Agentic AI systems, with applications across research, education, and clinical innovation. AI-M maintains dedicated AI development and deployment teams that work in close partnership with clinicians to ensure that AI tools are rigorously tested, safely integrated into real-world workflows, and continuously monitored following deployment. This integrated effort is carried out across the University of Toronto, St. Michael’s Hospital (Unity Health Toronto), and University Health Network (UHN), supporting the translation of AI innovation directly into mental health care.
