Participating in a Clinical Trial

The Interventional Psychiatry Program at St. Michael’s Hospital conducts clinical research to develop and improve treatments for individuals with complex or treatment-resistant mental health conditions. By participating in a study, you may help advance new approaches to care while contributing to a better understanding of mental health.

Participation in all studies is completely voluntary and conducted under rigorous ethical and safety oversight. Our research staff is available to answer questions and ensure you have the information needed to make an informed decision about taking part.

Clinical Trial FAQs for Patients

Step 1: Explore current studies
Review our current studies actively recruiting participants to see what fits your interests and eligibility.

Step 2: Complete a screening form or contact the study team

Step 3: Talk with the study coordinator
A coordinator will confirm basic eligibility, answer questions, and explain what participation involves.

Step 4: Consent and enrollment (if eligible)
If you choose to proceed, you’ll review and sign an informed consent form before any study procedures begin.

What is “informed consent”?
Informed consent means you’ll receive clear information about the study (what happens, risks, benefits, time commitment, privacy protections), and you can decide whether to participate. You may withdraw at any time.

Research is different from clinical care. Your participation is voluntary, and your clinical treatment decisions remain between you and your care team.

Every study is reviewed by a Research Ethics Board (REB). The team will explain potential risks and safety monitoring before you decide.

Some studies provide compensation for time and travel, and some do not. This will be explained during screening.

We take privacy seriously. Your information is stored securely and used only as described in the consent form.
